The Community Writing Project (CWP) offers writing workshops in poor and immigrant neighborhoods throughout the Chicago area, and publishes writers’ stories in the magazine Real Conditions.
We believe every person is a thinker and an artist, and that the seeds of change can be found in the artistic and intellectual renderings of ordinary people.

happening now

The CWP currently supports and facilitates several writing groups. For more information about current writing groups, click here.

The CWP hosts facilitator training workshops twice each year. For information about our 2023 Spring (English) and Summer (Spanish) facilitator training sessions, please contact us directly. To learn more about facilitating writing groups, see our resources.

Recent Publications and Presentations

In 2021-22, defying Covid, the CWP held writing groups on Zoom and in person, with many wonderful community partners, and published four magazines! To read the magazines on line, go to Publications. We also had two inspiring citywide readings: one on Zoom, and the other a hybrid reading at the Nathalie Salmon House. You can find the stories from those readings here.

DONATE

The Community Writing Project is a completely donor-funded, volunteer-based project. We rely on the dedicated work of volunteer writers, workshop facilitators, and magazine designers. The most costly aspect of our work is the publication of the magazines. We are currently seeking donation contributions in order to publish our 2023 Real Conditions magazines.  Contributors receive a year’s subscription of magazines! Simply click on the link below. Thank you for your generosity!
