The stories contained in these magazines were written by participants in the North Lawndale Employment Network’s (NLEN) “U-Turn Permitted” program. The mission of the NLEN is to improve the earnings potential of the residents of North Lawndale through innovative initiatives that lead to advancement and improved quality of life. The U-Turn Permitted program trains and guides men and women with records of criminal conviction in putting the past behind them while providing them the necessary tools to advance in the world of work. In 2006 and 2011 the Community Writing Project was fortunate to partner with participants in U-Turn Permitted, offering 6-session workshops as part of their training program.
